UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — On Friday, January 19, two masterclasses will be held at Penn State University featuring distinguished faculty from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music (CCM). Timothy Lees, concertmaster of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, will conduct a violin masterclass for Penn State students at 3:30 p.m. in room 122 of Music Building II.
Simultaneously, Catharine Carroll Lees, professor of viola and chair of the string department at CCM, will lead a viola masterclass in room 112 of Music Building I. Both sessions are free and open to the public.
Artist Profiles
Timothy Lees has served as concertmaster of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra since 1998. Alongside his orchestral duties, he is a faculty member at CCM, where he teaches violin and coaches students in orchestral audition techniques. Lees has also been a faculty member at the Sarasota Festival since 2004 and has held teaching and performance responsibilities at the Aspen Music Festival and School, where he served as concertmaster for both the Aspen Chamber Symphony and the Aspen Festival Orchestra.
Catharine Carroll Lees maintains an active career as a recitalist, chamber musician, and educator. At CCM, she is professor of viola and chair of the string department. She also is an artist/faculty member at the Aspen Music Festival and School and serves as principal violist of the Aspen Chamber Symphony. Lees has appeared as a soloist with the Aspen Chamber Symphony, CCM Chamber Players, and Wired, with upcoming engagements including a performance with CCM Philharmonia in Don Quixote. Her chamber music collaborations include work with noted musicians such as Gil Shaham, Jaime Laredo, Sarah Chang, Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg, and Joey Swensen, as well as members of the Cleveland, American, LaSalle, Ariel Quartets, and the Beaux Arts Trio.
