Joseph Lin, a distinguished violinist and pedagogue, will lead a special violin masterclass as part of Bard College Conservatory of Music’s event series. Lin has earned international acclaim through performances across the United States, Asia, and Europe. From 2011 to 2018, he served as the first violinist of the prestigious Juilliard String Quartet and continues to contribute as an instructor in violin and chamber music at The Juilliard School.
Among Lin’s recent artistic endeavors are collaborations with eminent pianist Robert Levin on Beethoven and Schubert works played on period instruments, as well as public performances of Bartók’s Second Violin Concerto and Beethoven’s late string quartets. He has also performed the complete cycle of Beethoven’s Violin Sonatas alongside pianist Helen Huang at Juilliard.
In 2020, marking the 300th anniversary of Johann Sebastian Bach’s Violin Sonatas and Partitas, Lin presented comprehensive cycles of these works in both Boston and Philadelphia. His versatility is underscored by recent seasons showcasing his skill on both violin and viola, with performances on period instruments from the Baroque and Classical eras.
In 2025, Joseph Lin will embark on a nationwide tour featuring a special program dedicated to Beethoven, including the Op. 95 “Serioso” Quartet, Op. 96 Sonata, and Op. 97 “Archduke” Trio.
Previously, from 2007 to 2011, Lin held a faculty position at Cornell University, where he initiated the Chinese Musicians Residency program. During this time, he engaged in collaborative projects with Cornell composers to analyze Bach’s Sonatas and Partitas and to develop new compositions inspired by Bach’s oeuvre.
Lin’s career includes being a founding member of the award-winning Formosa Quartet, which secured first prize at the 2006 London String Quartet Competition. His accolades date back to 1996 when he took first prize at the Concert Artists Guild Competition and was designated a Presidential Scholar in the Arts. Subsequent honors include the Pro Musicis Award in 1999 and first prize at the inaugural Michael Hill Violin Competition in New Zealand in 2001.
His discography features recordings of Korngold and Busoni with pianist Benjamin Loeb, Debussy, Franck, and Milhaud with pianist Orion Weiss, as well as complete unaccompanied works by Bach and Ysaÿe. His 2017 release includes Mozart’s A Major Violin Concerto with original cadenzas. With the Juilliard String Quartet, Lin has recorded Schubert’s Death and the Maiden, Elliott Carter’s Fifth Quartet, and a recent album featuring works by Beethoven, Mario Davidovsky, and Bartók.
Throughout the summer, Lin is a familiar presence at major music festivals, including Tanglewood, Ravinia, and Marlboro.
Joseph Lin graduated magna cum laude from Harvard University in 2000 and subsequently expanded his musical studies in China as a Fulbright scholar, focusing on Chinese music traditions and the guqin instrument.
This violin masterclass is free and open to all interested attendees.
