The Elgar Festival 2026, scheduled to take place from Saturday, May 23 to Sunday, May 31, will include a free public masterclass for young musicians on Thursday, May 28, aimed at nurturing the next generation of string players.
Elgar Festival 2026 to Host Free Masterclass for Young String Players – Education
The masterclass is open to talented young musicians aged 13 and above who play the violin, viola, cello, or double bass at Grade 6 level or higher. Six participants will be selected to take part in the session, which will focus on technique and musical interpretation.
The class will be led by Nick Trygstad, Head of Strings at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, an experienced educator and accomplished cellist. Trygstad has previously served as principal cellist of both the Hallé Orchestra and the Orchestra of Scottish Opera, and is a regular tutor with the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain.
Speaking about the initiative, Kenneth Woods, Artistic Director of the Elgar Festival, said:

How to Apply
Young musicians wishing to participate are invited to submit:

a covering letter, and

a video recording of the piece they wish to study
Applications should be sent to sue@elgarfestival.org, with a closing date of Monday, April 13, 2026.
Repertoire should consist of an English Miniature by Edward Elgar, or a work by another British composer.
Venue and Schedule
The masterclass will take place at The Firs, Elgar’s birthplace in Lower Broadheath, Worcester, from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm, followed by a public performance at 2:00 pm.

Held annually around the week closest to Edward Elgar’s birthday on June 2, the Elgar Festival is a major celebration of the composer’s music. The programme brings together world-class musicians alongside local choirs and ensembles, offering a rich mix of symphonic and string orchestra concerts, chamber music, choral works, recitals, workshops, and educational events.
